Description of video clip

Tom Whittaker opens the video piece with the following quote over footage of him climbing in the dark towards the summit of Mount Everest in 1998.

“Statisticians maintain a bumble bee cannot fly. Unwittingly they perform this miracle as a matter of course. We all have a little bumblebee in us. Despite the odds, we are propelled by our imaginations to envision a better world. Born on wings of hope and optimism, we struggle aloft. Whilst there, no matter how briefly, we provide the impetus and inspiration for others to embrace the pain and ecstasy of that upward journey.”

Following this is a short history of Tom’s attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1995 with Greg Child. Tom was within 1500 ft. of the summit, but had to turn back. Greg did make it to the summit and brought a piece of rock back to Tom, stating, “Whittaker, I want you to put this back where I got it from.”

Tom continues with the following quote over footage of climbing in daylight to the summit of Mount Everest in 1998.

“Everest for me and I believe for the world is physical and symbolic manifestation of overcoming insurmountable odds to achieve a dream. No longer do we climb in nail boots and Norfolk jackets, and for many the allegory is tired. For a person with an artificial foot, the difficulties are increased by half. Technology for us has not diminished the challenge, it has brought it into reach.”

The video ends with Tom and his climbing party on the summit of Mount Everest, May 27, 1998. Tom shows the rock Greg gave him in 1995 and leaves it on the summit, saying, “Greg, I took care of business.”
